A little research into my latest reading choice revealed that Heidi Julavits actually borrowed the title of her book. It comes from Bruno Bettelheim who wrote The Uses of Enchantment: The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales.
The ever helpful Wikipedia tells me that Bruno Bettelheim was a child psychologist and writer who was known for his work on Freud, psychoanalysis, and emotionally disturbed children. In his Uses of Enchantment published in 1976, Bettelheim uses Freudian psychology and symbolism to interpret traditional fairy tales and explain how children can use these stories to help make sense of the world.
Knowing about this other Uses of Enchantment adds a new perspective on my current Uses of Enchantment reading. I can already tell that I will have plenty of psychoanalysis and varying interpretations on what is fact and what is fiction to contend with. I just hope I can keep everything straight and not get lost down the rabbit hole.
