I know you thought we were done with The Year of Magical Thinking, but I have one more fun fact to share. The book was made into a play! A real play that was on Broadway and everything. The acclaimed Vanessa Redgrave starred in it as a character named… Joan Didion. It was adapted by Joan Didion herself, debuted in 2007, and included the passing of her daughter. You can hear Didion and Redgrave discussing the play here if you are so inclined.
I also found out that the play just recently came to my own hometown (or close enough to my hometown). Last week, the Boca Raton Theatre Guild put on a production of The Year of Magical Thinking at the Willow Theatre in Sugar Sand Park. So while I was reading the book, people I know back home could have been seeing the play at the exact same time. Coincidences! Vanessa Redgrave wasn’t starring in the Florida version of course. But I imagine with any actress in the lead, the story is still an emotional and moving experience.
