For book club last year we decided to read Push, as it had just been turned into the critically acclaimed movie Precious: Based on the Novel by Sapphire. I was then made to see the movie. Both were very well done, but very depressing. You couldn’t help but wonder how many bad things could happen to one person. It may very well be a reality for some people, but it makes for an intense book reading/movie watching experience.
And now we can go through it all again. Sapphire (real name: Ramona Lofton, apparently) has sold another book to Penguin. Titled The Kid, the new novel seems to be a sequel and focuses on Precious’ son “as he approaches manhood — alone, brutalized and with the soul of an artist.” Well, there goes any hope that the first book left you with that Precious might somehow make a slightly better life for her child. Oh well.
After the rave reviews for Precious, I wouldn’t be surprised if there is another movie too. What will this one be called, S0-And-So: Based on the Novel The Kid: Based on the Movie Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire? Just a thought.
