As cool as I assure you audiobooks are, you just don’t get that many pop culture references to them. Sure there was a recent Geico commercial and that one How I Met Your Mother road trip episode (which was not so flattering), but on the whole audiobooks are not mentioned nearly enough.
Which is why I was so excited to see an audiobook shout-out in The Perks of Being a Wallflower… and during June is Audiobook Month no less! On page 77, Stephen Chbosky writes, “My dad doesn’t read books too much anymore because he listens to books on cassette tapes on the way to work, and he gets them free from the library.”
Okay, so it’s not the most exciting mention but still. And yes, it shows just how long ago this book was written. In 1999, people still listened to cassette tapes. Today, there are probably kids who don’t even know what a cassette tape is. Don’t worry though, I still have my Turn The Beat Around cassette at home in Florida.
So, yeah, go audiobooks!
