Harold Fry Takes Me By Surprise

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold FryI shouldn’t have been surprised. I knew The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry was leading somewhere sad. I knew it. I just wasn’t quite prepared for where it went.

Yesterday I described Rachel Joyce’s novel as “pleasant reading.” After finishing the book, I don’t think I did it justice with that description. It starts quiet but it makes an impact.

Almost immediately after pressing “publish” on my last post, I got to the crux of TUPOHF (my new acronym since the title is too long to keep typing.) I won’t spoil anything but there came the expected tragedy. But it wasn’t quite what I expected. Even though it made me really sad, I appreciated that there was a new depth to the book.

Overall, I would recommend TUPOHF. It’s delightful tale of a man walking across England and the people he meets along the way. At the same time, it is thoughtful and emotional.

And I really like the cover.
